It’s that time of the year again! Excitement, nerves, new school bags, school uniforms, final items on the book list etc. YES IT’S THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR! This also means back to school morning routine and MAKING SCHOOL LUNCHES, probably a lot of them! For some of us Mums, you have kids who are off to kindergarten or preschool for the first time. You may be thinking, “Will they actually eat their school lunch?”
Here are 3 useful tips that will help you ignore those anxious thoughts that can come up at this time. No more worrying about whether your kids have enough to eat or whether they will eat what’s in their lunch boxes.
1. Kids Will Eat Food That Is Quick To Eat
The reality is that our kids often have such a short time for eating during the school day. Foods which are time consuming to eat will get ignored or unfinished. So look out for tricky packaging that is hard for little fingers to open. Also foods that are fiddly or require lots of chewing.
Cutting up fruits and vegetables at home means kids can finish eating in the short time they have. For example, I pre-slice apples for school, while at home my kids will eat whole apples, and I also pre-peel mandarins. Some other fruits which are quick to eat include strawberries, watermelon, bananas and sliced pear.
2. Kids Will Eat Food That Stays Fresh Well
One of my kids is really sensitive to textures and tastes. Anything that doesn’t last well won’t get eat if they are really hungry. It’s true some foods taste better eaten as soon as they are prepared while other foods will keep their texture and taste, even hours later.
A couple of times I have made the same food as my kids, for my own lunch. I recommend doing that a few times. It gives you an idea of what your kids’ lunches actually taste like hours later. Is the sandwich dry or soggy? Does the fruit go too soft and brown? Is the yoghurt still cold by the time they come to eat it? Would I enjoy eating what I give my kids to eat?
3. Kids Will Eat Food That Is Simple
Unless preparing a Pinterest worthy school lunch is your thing, I think it’s perfectly ok for us Mums to keep it simple. In fact I think I have almost perfected simple school lunches. Most days I make a simple sandwich with 2 to 3 ingredients and add in some finger salad, for my kids’ school lunches. It is simple, it is quick for them to eat and I know it tastes the same hours later as it did when it was first made.
Simple may mean for you a wrap with 3 fillings- cheese, carrot and lettuce. Other examples of simple food are chunks of vegetables like cucumber and capsicum, popcorn and leftovers, such as roast meats.
Know also that is perfectly ok to not have a huge variety of food in school lunches. Remember it is just part of what they eat during a normal week!!
